Smith’s second in a week secures Torquay win
Port Vale loanee Nathan Smith has enjoyed the last week at Torquay after he scored his first two senior goals.
Defender Smith scored the winner in a 1-0 FA Trophy win over Macclesfield on the 17th February and he has followed it up with his first league goal as Torquay beat Welling 2-0 on Tuesday evening.
The win over Welling is Torquay’s second league win of the week and a vital three points as they look to move clear of the National League relegation zone. Smith is certainly playing his part for United. He has now notched up 31 appearances this season.
A month ago, Smith earned high praise from Torquay manager Kevin Nicholson who said: “He’s a monster, he’s a freak of nature really. He’s a young lad that barely says a word and then he just goes about his stuff every day to the level I expect.”
Smith will no doubt be hoping to use the experience to break into the Vale first-team next season. At just 19 years of age and with a full season of National League football behind him, he certainly looks a hot prospect for the future.
