Post-match violence spoils Vale celebrations
Two police officers were sadly injured after violence following Port Vale’s win over Sheff Utd, the Sentinel reports.
According to the newspaper: “A number of violent incidents occurred outside Vale Park after the club’s home game against Sheffield United as rival fans left the ground, resulting in one man being arrested on suspicion of affray.
Around 15 men were seen kicking and punching each other on the Co-op car park and had to be separated by parking attendants.”
Witnesses speaking to the Sentinel claimed that away fans were responsible for the scenes. Mark Porter, vice chairman of the Vale supporters’ club, told the newspaper: ” I thought the atmosphere in the ground was good but it seemed there were a minority of Sheffield United fans in the bottom corner of the stand that had come for trouble and there was a flare thrown on the pitch.”
The policing at Vale Park has been a contentious issue for some time now, but despite fans’ concerns, no-one wants to have the welfare of police officers and innocent fans put in jeopardy.
OVF hopes that the CCTV footage identifies the offenders and that any (whether they be home or away fans) are punished appropriately.
