Billy Wootton was a locally-born full-back who began his career with spells at Trentham and Congleton Town. He then joined Potteries neighbours Stoke City for the 1923-24 season. However, he failed to make a senior appearance for the Potters before joining the Valiants in 1925.

After retiring as a player, he later moved into football management with spells at Northwich Victoria, Halifax Town and Oldham Athletic. He spent twelve years at Northwich Victoria and led them to a Cheshire Senior Cup win in 1937.
