Billy Wootton player profile
Billy Wootton was a locally-born full-back who began his career with spells at Trentham and Congleton Town. He then joined Potteries neighbours Stoke City for the 1923-24 season. However, he failed to make a senior appearance for the Potters before joining the Valiants in 1925.
The defender was mainly a bit-part player during his seven seasons at the Vale only reaching double figures on one occasion – during the 1929-30 season – when Port Vale were crowned champions of Division Three North.
After a total of 58 Port Vale appearances over seven years, he was transferred to Southend United in August 1932 and he had a one year spell with the club making two appearances. After retiring as a player, he later moved into football management with spells at Northwich Victoria, Halifax Town and Oldham Athletic. He spent twelve years at Northwich Victoria and led them to a Cheshire Senior Cup win in 1937.
