Alan Johnson player profile:
Alan Johnson was a locally-born right-winger who had progressed through the club’s youth ranks. He was then signed as a professional with Port Vale in 1964 by the club’s then manager Freddie Steele.
The youngster failed to make a senior appearance in his first season (1964-1965) but the winger finally made his debut in his second season – from 1965-1966. When he did play he made an immediate impact as he scored on his debut in a 2-2 away draw with Barrow on 6 November 1965. However, despite that goal scoring debut, he was to make only made one more senior appearance for the Vale side before leaving the Valiants.
In his third season with the club, Jackie Mudie had taken over as manager of the Valiants from Freddie Steele and he opted to sell the out of favour winger to nearby non-league side Stafford Rangers in November 1966.
