Born in Kidsgrove, Ken Higgs would eventually have a memorable cricketing career as an England International cricketer but he began his sporting career as a junior player for Port Vale FC.
Higgs did not make a first-team appearance for the club and in his late teens he picked up cricket. During military service he began playing minor counties cricket for Staffordshire and took 46 wickets at an average of under 14 in 1957. He was recommended to first-class county Lancashire whom he joined in 1958.
In 1965, Higgs’ form earned him a Test call-up and he would go to play in 15 Tests taking 71 wickets at an average of 20.74. In the first-class game he would take 1,536 wickets at an average of 23.61. In all he took 100 wickets in a season five times, and over 90 twice.
