Garth Butler player profile:
Birmingham born defender Gareth Butler was a young 23 year old full-back who joined Port Vale FC from nearby rivals Derby County in June 1946.
Defender Butler played twelve times for the Valiants in the 1946-47 season and became a regular pick in the 1947-48 season. For the next three seasons, he made one hundred and seventeen appearances in the Port Vale first team. It included the 1949-50 season, the club’s final season to be played at the Old Recreation Ground stadium.
In the 1950-51 season, he dropped out of first-team contention making just five more appearances. Sadly, he then picked up a serious knee injury. By October 1951, after an unsuccessful time trying to recover from the injury he was sadly forced to retire from professional football aged just 28. He had made 134 senior appearances for the Valiants, the only club that he had made League appearances for.
