Stoke-on-Trent born right-sided defender Fred Donaldson graduated through the Port Vale youth ranks to sign a professional contract in 1954. He made his senior debut in 1955, in a 1-0 win over Lincoln City in May, but he then had to wait until 1957 before he made another appearance for the Valiants.
Under Vale manager Norman Low, Donaldson finally became a regular pick played 27 games as right-back in the 1957-58 season. He featured a further eleven times in the 1958-59 season as the side won the Fourth Division title and another eight times during the 1959-60 season.
Donaldson was sold to Exeter City in 1960 for a transfer fee of £2,000 and he later had spells with Chester City, a lengthy spell with Macclesfield Town and another with Stafford Rangers. He finished his playing career having made over three hundred appearances including over two hundred for Macclesfield.
