Clipping Hero #2: Andy Jones
The premise of this series is very simple – press clippings of a prominent Port Vale figure. In this episode it’s Andy Jones
It will probably come as no surprise that OVF have plenty of images of the Welsh striker as he is editor Rob Fielding’s favourite Port Vale player.
Here he is in early action from the 1985-86 season. In the second image, he is alongside early strike partner Ally Brown.
Here’s an example of the ferocious Jones’ shooting.
This is Jones celebrating his four goals against Aldershot at the beginning of the 1987-88 season. Jones had hit five goals against Newport in the final game of the previous season, so this took him to a total of nine goals in two Vale Park appearances. The OVF editor was privileged to be at both games.
Jones was somewhat of a rising lower leagues star at this time and it was no surprise that he made the pages of the popular Match Weekly magazine.
Following his big-money move to Charlton Athletic, Jones’ return to the Valiants on loan made headlines.
The same cannot be said for his drumming skills.
Remarkably, the OVF articles on Andy Jones resulted in Rob Fielding getting in touch with his old hero and the retired striker was invited to attend a Port Vale match where he went on to the pitch to receive a well-deserved ovation from the fans.
