Arthur Longbottom player profile
Arthur Longbottom was a forward who signed for Port Vale FC from Queens Park Rangers in 1961.
Born in Leeds, Longbottom began his career at West London side QPR where he played over two hundred games and scored 67 goals. He was also the club’s top-scorer for three consecutive seasons in the fifties.
Port Vale FC manager Norman Low was impressed enough to sign the 28 year-old for a £2,000 fee in May 1961. In his first season with the Valiants, Longbottom was joint top-scorer alongside Bert Llewellyn with 20 goals.
He had scored twice in eleven games in the 1962-63 season before new Port Vale manager Freddie Steele opted to sell him to Millwall for a £2,000 fee.
The forward then had spells with Oxford United and Colchester United before bringing his playing career to a close. He had scored 118 goals in 360 appearances during his eleven year career.
