Tony Butler player profile:
Tall centre-half Tony Butler started his professional career with Gillingham in 1991 and spent five years in Kent making 179 appearances. He then moved on to Blackpool in August 1996 for £225,000.
He was snapped up by Brian Horton’s Port Vale FC side in March 1998 for a fee of £115,000. Horton had brought in a number of recruits to stave off relegation although Butler played just four times that season. He played fifteen times in the 1998-1999 season before he left for West Bromwich Albion almost exactly a year after joining the Valiants. He cost West Brom £140,000 after making just nineteen appearances during his stay with the Valiants.
The defender spent three years at the Hawthorns before moving on to further spells with Bristol City and a second spell at Blackpool. He then dropped into non-league football with Forest Green Rovers, Hinkley United and Alfreton Town.
