Alfred Lyons, who was also known as Tom Lyons, was born in Hednesford and he began his football career at Hednesford Town. He was signed by Aston Villa in 1907 and would make over two hundred appearances for the club. His honours would include a League title in 1909 and winning the FA Cup final in 1913.
The full-back initially joined Port Vale as a guest in 1917 as football resumed after World War One. During a five year stay with the club he made 74 appearances. During a 4-0 FA Cup win over Loughborough Colliery in 1919 Lyons scored a penalty for Port Vale – the only senior goal of his long career.
The full-back left Port Vale in 1922 and joined nearby Walsall as a player-coach. He also played cricket for Staffordshire as a wicket keeper.
