Paul Smith player profile:
Speedy winger Paul Smith started his career at Sheffield United and played three times as the Blades won promotion in 1984. He had a prolific loan spell at Stockport County in 1985 where he scored six times in nine games.
In 1986, John Rudge swooped and signed the winger for a fee of £10,000. Smith had a good first season with the Valiants, scoring nine times in 51 games. Despite the stats, Smith was often inconsistent much to the annoyance of the Vale fans. It was therefore a surprise when non-league side Lincoln City made a move for the winger at the start of the following season. Smith was sold on for £40,000, a significant profit for Port Vale and a record fee for a non-league side at the time.
He went on to make over 250 appearances at Lincoln and later went to have a spell with Halifax Town.
