Michael Walsh player profile
Michael Walsh made his debut as a seventeen year-old for Scunthorpe United and made a hundred appearances before John Rudge signed him for Port Vale in 1998 for a fee of £100,000.
Walsh gradually became a key member of the Port Vale defence and such was his form he was touted for an England U21 call-up. However, Walsh’s spell at Vale Park soon became frequently blighted by injuries which meant the player made a total of just 194 appearances in a nine year stay at the club.
Walsh did pick up one honour during his time with the Valiants as he played in the 2001 LDV Vans Trophy final win over Brentford but a succession of back, neck and shoulder injuries saw his playing time increasing limited. The player wanted to stay beyond 2007 to take him to ten years and qualification for a testimonial. But the club refused and the defender retired from the game a sadly unfulfilled talent due to his injuries.
