Martin Henderson player profile:
Martin Henderson was an experienced striker who had previously had spells with Glasgow Rangers and Leicester City.
In 1983, Port Vale manager John McGrath signed Henderson from Chesterfield in exchange for Bob Newton and £8,000. It was a controversial move as Newton was a crowd favourite and top-scorer in the previous season’s promotion campaign.
It proved to be a disaster. Henderson was not a great success scoring just seven goals as the club were relegated back to the Fourth Division.
His spell ended in controversial circumstances. In the summer of 1984, he was asked to turn up for pre-season training but never arrived. He was subsequently sacked by the Valiants. He then moved into non-league football with Spalding.
