Lee Ashcroft was an experienced forward and former England U21 International who joined Port Vale for a one month loan spell from Wigan Athletic in 2002. He made four appearances without scoring before returning to his parent club.
Ashcroft began his career at Preston North End where he turned professional under former Vale manager John McGrath. He also had a spell at West Bromwich Albion after the club paid £250,000 for his services. He had a second spell at Preston and also played for Grimsby Town before his loan switch to Vale Park. After leaving Port Vale he had a further loan spell with Huddersfield Town.
The winger finished his career playing in the non-league and had played over four hundred times for twelve clubs before announcing his retirement. He later went on to manage a handful of clubs in non-league and led Longridge Town to two promotions.
