Jimmy Oakes player profile:
The locally-born left-back Jimmy Oakes was regarded by the contemporary press as the best full-back to be uncapped by England.
Oakes turned professional with Port Vale in 1923 and was a regular pick by 1924. He quickly became renowned for his “clean play.” and he was a key player as the Valiants won the Third Division title in 1929-30.
After three hundred appearances for the Valiants, he was reluctantly sold to Charlton Athletic in 1933 by the cash-strapped club. Ironically, Oakes had appeared in Vale’s game against Charlton on Boxing Day which had been called off. By the time the fixture was re-arranged, Oakes lined up in the Charlton starting eleven.
Oakes made two hundred appearances for Charlton Athletic with just under half of them in the top flight.
