Gary West player profile:
Tall central defender Gary West was signed alongside Dean Glover to take Port Vale over the promotion finshing line in 1989. Going well in the League, Vale had suffered a devastating double blow with central defenders Bob Hazell and Phil Sproson suffering what would be career-ending injuries. Faced with rebuilding his defence, manager John Rudge splashed the cash spending a club record £200,000 on Glover and £70,000 on West.
West had begun his career at Sheffield United and had also had a spell at Lincoln City before joining Gillingham. He was purchased by Rudge for £70,000 in February 1989. He played fourteen games that season including the play-off final game which saw the Valiants promoted.
The next season he struggled with injuries and was loaned back to his former club Gillingham in November. He was then loaned out to Lincoln City in January 1991. In August 1991 he joined Lincoln on a permanent deal for £25,000 and he ended his career with Boston United.
