Eddie Baily player profile:
Eddie Baily began his football career at Tottenham Hotspur in 1946 and made 325 appearances for the side over the next ten years. His form earned him nine England caps and he also scored five times for his country.
In 1956, the 31 year-old became Port Vale’s then record signing at a cost of £7,000 when manager Freddie Steele added him to his side.
Initially, it looked to be a masterstroke as Baily scored on his debut and swiftly became a prolific scorer. But the club felt that he didn’t fit into the side’s style of play as he was labelled an “individualist” and he was sold on to Nottingham Forest for the same £7,000 fee.
Baily’s spell in Burslem had lasted less than two years during which he had played 27 games and scored eight times.
After leaving Forest, Baily had a spell at Leyton Orient where he finished his playing career. He made 458 appearances and scored 98 goals.
