Anthony Gardner was a locally born youngster who progressed through the Port Vale junior ranks to earn a professional contract in 1998.
The towering central defender made his debut in October 1998 aged just 18 years of age. However, he soon impressed and became a key member of the Port Vale sides of both John Rudge and Brian Horton.
He was voted Port Vale Young Player of the Year in 1998-1999 before he moved on to Tottenham Hotspur in January 2000 for a fee of around £1m.
He earned a solitary England cap while at Spurs and had later spells with Hull City, Crystal Palace and Sheffield Wednesday. He retired from playing through injury in 2014 with a record of over three hundred senior apearances.
