Alex Williams player profile:
A graduate of the Manchester City youth system, goalkeeper Alex Williams progressed into the senior side and was the regular first-choice from 1983 to 1985. He was a member of the City team which won promotion to the top-flight in 1984-85. However, Williams lost his place to Eric Nixon in 1985 and with the arrival of Perry Suckling he fell out of first-team contention.
Following an injury to Mark Grew, Williams was signed on loan in 1985 by Port Vale manager John Rudge. He was then signed permanently in January 1986 for a £10,000 fee. However, Williams was suffering a recurring back injury which restricted him to just six appearances in 1987-88 and he subsequently retired from the game.
In total he had made 168 career appearances and later moved into a role with the Manchester City community programme.
