“Cheaper for us not to have Crewe fans…”
Port Vale chairman Norman Smurthwaite has told the Sentinel that it would be cheaper not to have away fans for the game against Crewe because of the high costs of policing the game.
Smurthwaite commented: “In my short tenure I have never understood why so few Crewe fans travel the short distance to support their team in a local derby.”
It would be cheaper for us not to have Crewe fans, taking into account the police bill and the extra security…

“We were told yesterday it was 600 . On that basis I don’t make any money from the away gate.
“But those costs are as much Vale’s fault as they are Crewe’s because of the history between the clubs.”
