Vale will make signings if gates increase
Vale owner Norman Smurthwaite says he will fund more signings if attendances increase during the New Year period.
Smurthwaite says he will make money for new signings available if gates rise above the current 5,386 average for the next three home games.
He commented: “I know last season I said I didn’t have the appetite to fund a go at promotion and I got a lot of criticism for that.
“If we can get some healthy gates – say 6,000 – then that might give me the confidence to get my hand in my pocket.
“My New Year wish is for us to get into the play-offs – and we are only four points off that.
“There is some corrective action needed to get us up there.
“January will determine what happens and, if I can see that commitment from the fans, then I will revisit it.”
