47 years on: Tommy McLaren’s debut

The 25th of November 2014 marks 47 years since Port Vale cult hero Tommy McLaren made his first-team debut.

McLaren began his career with Berwick Rangers but was one of a number of Scottish youngsters to be signed by Vale general manager Sir Stanley Matthews in 1967. After impressing in the reserves, McLaren made his senior debut against Swansea Town (a 4-2 defeat for Vale) and scored his first goal in March in a 1-0 win over Exeter City in 1968.

He played for the Valiants for a further ten years, making 333 appearances and scoring 28 goals. Sadly, he died in July 1978 aged 29 years of age.
