It was a cup competition between English and Italian football teams. The competition initially ran from 1970 to 1975 and again for a spell from 1992 to 1996.

Port Vale FC finished as the runners-up in the final season of the Anglo-Italian Cup competition. It took part during the 1995-96 season. In the final, Port Vale faced Genoa at Wembley stadium. Martin Foyle scored twice for the Vale in a 5-2 defeat.
