Thread: A question

    Question A question

    Greetings one and all!

I have a small gap in my records relating to Port Vale. None of my reference books or internet searches have given me the answer. So, I am putting my question to the people who will assuredly know the answer - may be the older fan or the record keepers amongst you

Question: What was the half-time score in the Port Vale v Scunthorpe match played on 23 March, 1970.

    Hope someone can help.

If the full time score was 0-0 I think I can help...

Thank you for your input, krakaddict. However, on Monday 23 March, 1970, Port Vale lost at home to Scunthorpe 1-2. Gough scored the Vale goal in this Division 4 match.

    So, my question still stands.

Either Phil or the Sentinel archive is probably the only option, Vale history by Kent only mentions the final score which ended Vales unbeaten home run.

Thanks for the reply, Fosse69. I have Jeff Kent's Vale book and many other similar tomes, but none apparently go as far as giving half-times. The Rothmans Yearbook does give the half-time scores, but unfortunately not for this particular match. Thanks again.

It was a promotion season for Vale, Scunthorpe the only team to do the league double. 1st away defeat 22 Nov, 1st and only home defeat 23 Mar. Kent does occasionally come on this site, so may spot your post.

I was there but for the life of me I can't remember. I think in the away game (no use to you at all!) we were 1-0 up at half time but I just can't recall how the home game went.
Sorry to get your hopes up when you saw another person posting on this thread.

Maybe one of the old Sentinel Football Annuals from 1970 might provide an answer, if anyone still has one.
The Sentinel archives are not on line and only available direct from Hanley Library.

Thank you for your comment, TheSage. This must be a very active forum. Although my question remains unanswered as of now, I'm surprised at how many views this post has received already. I am not anywhere near the Stoke area, but my local library may have access to newspaper archives dating from the 70's. I'll take a trip there tomorrow morning. They may even have other reference books that I don't have If I find the answer, I'll post it here so that everyone can sleep easier, unless, of course, someone beats me to it!
