Matchday Thread: Southend United v Port Vale

Dark days at present with the fixtures piling up on the journey to 50 points. However we have a trip to the seaside where hopefully the tide will turn for us, and the gradual improvements and team cohesion will be fruitful. Could well be by the next seaside trip it will be all over. News of a new goalkeeper breaking, cover at least.

With the games going on around us, it's imperative now that we do not lose. Maybe go to 5 at the back, like we did a few away games last season. On a smaller pitch such as roots hall pack the middle and don't allow any space for them to play in, then break in numbers.

    -----------------------[keeper]---------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------
    ----------Purkiss---Smith---Knopps----------
    --Guy----------------------------------------Kiko--
    ---------Prohouley---Pugh---Foley-----------
    --------------------------------------------------------
    --------------------------Eagles---------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------
    ------------------------Forrester-------------------

When he first came I wasn't too impressed with Chris Eagles but I've liked what I've seen when he's started the previous two. However, defensively he left Callum Guy exposed far too much, so perhaps he could fill in that No. 10 role? As long as the No. 10 and the lone striker are close enough together and link well (Like Pope and Dodds did) they you don't necessarily need two up front. Certainly, Hooper hasn't been doing too well of late and could be more useful coming off the bench.

I haven't named a keeper because I don't know how I feel about Fasan. Two great penalty saves but I haven't seen him do much else. He'd probably edge it at the moment because I literally know nothing about the new lad.

Guy - despite being exposed last time out - did very well indeed for a covering full back. Hopefully as a wing back it should suit him more, as well as Kiko.

I stuck that Prohouley in the middle because I couldn't honestly think of another central midfielder we have apart from Brown. Personally I'd play Tavares but MB certainly won't do that.

Forrester over Hooper because he can sort of hold a ball up and played the lone role successfully at the start of the season before his injury.

However, Brown can't use the excuse that the players are tired now, when they put in a bad performance. Hope lady luck goes our way and we come away with 3 points.
