Port Vale keeper Rob Lainton sees red in reserves defeat
Any plans to give Rob Lainton extended paying time were dashed when he was dismissed 22 minutes into Vale’s 3-1 loss to Wigan reserves on Tuesday.
Lainton has only just been recalled to the Vale first-team but his sending-off will not result in a suspension from first-team matches.
A strong Vale line-up saw Donovan Wilson start upfront while striker Tyrone Barnett was again employed in an unfamiliar centre-half role.
The Valiants took the lead on nine minutes when Forrester set up Wilson to score but the striker was sacrificed on 22 minutes when Lainton was dismissed for a professional foul. Youngster Joe Slinn came off the bench to go in goal. Slinn’s first task was to face a Wigan penalty which was converted by Victor Maffeo to level the scores.
Wigan took the lead against Vale’s ten men on 58 minutes through Tyler Golden before adding a third on seventy minutes.
Vale: Lainton, Calveley, Davis, Barnett, Pugh, Harness, Regis, Middleton, Montano, Wilson (Slinn), Forrester (Benns)
