Newport 1-1 Vale reaction: fans say subs changed the game
Port Vale supporters applaud manager Neil Aspin’s “positive” substitutions against Newport County…
Players and management
“I thought it was a very good point, especially when we were 1-0 behind. Sometimes you have a draw and you think you have dropped points, but, especially with our position in the table, I think any point we get away from home is a good point….”
Port Vale manager Neil Aspin
“We were the better team, without being at our best, and we’ve just given them one of the softest goals I’ve seen…”

“The game was really scrappy and our attacking players just couldn’t get a foothold in the game and we didn’t get around Pope as we have been doing. However they were a strong side and weren’t as bad as I expected them to be. But second-half was much better from us, we had the better (half) chances, got up around Pope and improved our passing too. The substitutions were the right ones to make and they affected the game in a positive way…”

“A good point away from home against a team doing well this season. The first-half was pretty dire, I thought Gibbons had loads of time to clear the ball for their goal but other than that he had a good game. The subs changed the game and a good goal from Forrester with a very good assist from Pope…”

“I am excited with regards to the potential partnership between Pope and Forrester with the latter in the number 10 role that Harness hasn’t really excelled in. It’s early, early days though…”

“It was a terrible first-half with both teams lacking anything resembling football at all. The second-half was better. Regis looks a real find, Forrester was lively, defence was OK with Anderson the pick. I will take a point away after a poor showing but the squad does now resemble a fighting unit…”

“Special mention to Tom Anderson, this lad was excellent tonight against a quick and tricky forward line of Newport. He won countless headers and cleared everything in his way. Well done Tom…”

“That was a really poor game to watch, apart from the goal entertainment value was zero. Both sides huffed and puffed and I’ve seen better quality football on Wolstanton Marsh. First-half they edged it, second we did. Vale’s goal was a great bit of interplay between Pope and Forrester, and a good finish from him. From then on we had the better of the play and could have gone on to take the points. Regis looks like a good footballer and initial impressions he could be a good find…”
