Match report: Port Vale 1-0 Newcastle B
Tyrone Barnett scored his first senior goal for Port Vale as they progressed to the checkatrade trophy knock-out stages.
Vale made eight changes including starts for Adam Yates, James Gibbons and Danny Pugh.
It was Gibbons’ superb pass which set up Barnett for the opener on twenty minutes. However, Vale were stretched in the second period as Newcastle’s youngsters forced keeper Kelle Roos into a string of saves. However, the Valiants held on to record their first win since the opening day of the season.
The result takes Vale into the knock-out stages on a night overshadowed by the news that Vale legends Neil Aspin and John Rudge could be returning as manager and director of football respectively.
