Port Vale 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur, 1988
This famous FA Cup upset knocked Terry Venables cup holders out at the fourth round stage. John Rudge’s Port Vale side had only scraped into the fourth round with a last-gasp win over Macclesfield Town but it was worth it. Port Vale 2-1 Everton, 1996
Another famous FA Cup upset by John Rudge’s Port Vale side. The Valiants had already secured a famous draw at Goodison Park but went one better in the replay. The game was played on Valentine’s Day and one of the banners predicted the outcome with “Roses are red, violets are blue – Everton 1 Port Vale “. Derby County 2-3 Port Vale, 1990
This game is perhaps not as fondly remembered as the previous two but nevertheless it was an outstanding achievement, especially as the replayed tie took place away from home. Facing a Derby side featuring England goalkeeper Peter Shilton, the Valiants produced an outstanding counter-attacking display. Read our article on it here
Port Vale 2-0 Blackpool, 1954
One of the most astounding seasons in the club’s history produced this memorable game against cup holders Blackpool. Legendary winger Stanley Matthews was kept quiet by the Iron Curtain defence as Freddie Steele’s men continued a cup run which stretched to the semi-finals. Read about that match here
Burslem Port Vale 2-1 Sheffield United, 1898
Arguably the most important giant killing in the club’s history, this result against the all-conquering Blades side was so shocking that it helped the Valiants regain their place in the Football League. Read our feature on that game here
