It’s coverage of an FA Cup first round tie between Port Vale and Hartlepool United during the 1994-1995 season. As members of the second tier, Vale should have qualified for the third round of the FA Cup, but were forced to take part in the first round to make up the numbers after Aldershot went bust and Maidstone United resigned from the league.
It turned out to be an excellent day for the Valiants as John Rudge’s side thrashed the visitors by hitting six goals and keeping a clean sheet into the bargain.
For the record, the Port Vale goals came from defender Gareth Griffiths, striker Joe Allon, defender Dean Glover and a hat-trick from renowned forward Martin Foyle.
The game took place on November 12th, 1994 at Vale Park. However, the joy was to be shortlived as the Valiants were to exit in the next round after a shock 1-0 defeat to Scraborough.
