Match report: Charlton Athletic 2-0 Port Vale
Port Vale suffered yet another away defeat as Charlton ran out two-nil winners at the Valley on Saturday.
Manager Bruno Ribeiro made three changes bringing in Seb Amoros, Anthony Defreitas and Kjell Knops and Vale initially made a decent start. However, the home side were having the better chances with the woodwork rattled and Jak Alnwick forced into a good save in the opening fifteen minutes.
Charlton eventually took the lead on thirty minutes when Josh Magennis scored with a towering header. Vale were restricted to a solitary effort by Jones before the home side doubled their lead. Vale nemesis Nicky Ajose took advantage of a mis-placed pass by Tavares to double their advantage on 44 minutes.
The Valiants brought on Martin Paterson for Amoros and had a chance for Kelly but the away side were struggling to create enough chances and if anything the home side came closer to taking the lead but one effort was ruled out for offside and another drew a fine save from Alnwick.
Vale took off the injured Thomas and brought on Pereira while Anton Forrester made a return in place of Sam Kelly.
In the dying moments, Vale had chances for Smith and Paterson but in truth this was another clearcut away defeat and the Valiants really need to work out a system that allows them to pick up points away from Vale Park.
