A fit Ryan Inniss is crucial to Port Vale’s play-off aspirations

The loan defender could have a crucial role to play if Vale are to sneak into the play-off places.

As the business end of the season approaches, Port Vale remain on the cusp of the play-off places and Rob Page’s men will still fancy their chances of sneaking into the top-six. Vale have improved considerably as the season’s gone on and one of the biggest reasons for their surge up the League One table is the form and fitness of central defender Ryan Inniss.

Although the Valiants do still have defensive frailties, they look much more stable with Inniss’ commanding presence at the back…

The youngster, who picked up a knock during the recent victory over Peterborough, is currently on-loan from Premier League side Crystal Palace and is widely regarded as one of their brightest talents. In order to gain experience, he was loaned out to Vale at the start of the campaign and although his spell has been disrupted by injury, when fit he has slotted in well at the heart of the defence. Although the Valiants do still have defensive frailties, they look much more stable with Inniss’ commanding presence at the back. Vale fans will be keeping their fingers crossed that Inniss is fit to face league leaders Burton on Saturday.

At the time of writing, Port Vale sit just outside the play-off spots but will fancy their chances of snatching a last-gasp place in the top six. Vale currently have enhanced odds of 9/1 with Betway to achieve this goal and from there, who knows? Page’s side are in great form and, if they can maintain this momentum throughout the remainder of the season, could be a major force throughout the post-season.

Inniss has been a rock at the back this season and Vale will be desperate to keep him next season – especially if they secure promotion to the Championship. At just 20 years old, he’s still raw and Palace may prefer him to get experience at Vale rather than plying his trade in the youth teams at Selhurst Park. After all, he’s now able to develop his understanding of the lower leagues and this should enhance his ability to deal with certain situations.

As he matures further, he’ll blossom into a top talent…

At the time of writing, Betway are offering 33/1 on Vale to get promotion but can you get even bigger odds via their enhanced multiples section. Page’s men are full of confidence right now and they genuinely are within touching distance of breaking into the top six. And with a relatively straightforward run of fixtures coming up, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see Inniss and Vale feature in the post-season at the end of the campaign.

Inniss isn’t quite the complete package just yet but Page can help him to improve even further at Vale Park. He’s strong, quick and not afraid to get stuck in but he can get caught out of position at times. Inniss must improve that side of his game especially if Vale are to gain promotion this season. But Inniss’ presence is growing and as he matures further, he’ll blossom into a top talent.
