Match Report: Wigan 3-0 Port Vale
Ryan McGivern was sent-off and Richard Duffy scored an own-goal as Vale were swept aside by Wigan on Saturday.
After the impressive away win over Doncaster Rovers, manager Rob Page named the same squad that took part in that game while Wigan named new signing and former Valiant Sam Morsy on the bench. However, there was a late change to the Vale starting eleven with Sam Foley coming into the team in place of Michael O’Connor.
The Vale got off to a poor start as Wigan took the lead after just six minutes. Wildschut’s cross looked to be deflected in by Vale defender Richard Duffy. Both sides then had chances to score with Kennedy and Leitch-Smith having chances for Vale and Grigg for the home side.
But the match was effectively over five minutes before the break when Ryan McGivern fouled Grigg in the box and was dismissed. Grigg scored the resulting spot-kick. Vale brought on Ryan Inniss for Matthew Kennedy as they engaged in damage-limitation tactics.
It was backs to the wall for Vale and no real surprise that Grigg made it 3-0 to the home side on 69 minutes. It was a sorry afternoon for Vale whose chance of a result probably ended once McGivern was dismissed.
