Team News

The two names on Vale fans’ minds will be JJ Hooper and Ryan Inniss but the probability is that neither will start. Rob Page appears to believe that Hooper needs a couple of reserve games to adjust to League One while he will also not “make changes for the sake of it.” Page is keen to stress that once he is fully fit, Inniss will be a key member of the squad but for this game. there’s every possibility that Vale will name the same starting XI as the Crewe match.

In contrast, it could be all-change for visitors Burnley. Sean Dyche appears keen to give some squad players game-time and could make a number of changes.

Pre-match quote

“There’s a lot to play for…” – Rob Page

Last time we met…

Chris Shuker: Vale’s goalscorer last time we met

The two sides last met in another League Cup clash – this time in 2012. It ended in disappointment for Vale as Burnley won 3-1. Vale’s scorer was Chris Shuker with one of two goals he scored for Vale, while the visitors scored their goals through Chris McCann, Charlie Austin and Dean Marney.

Club Connections

John Rudge worked his magic in 1990 when he somehow got Burnley to stump up £60,000 for 34 year-old Ron Futcher. Futcher had been a class act for Vale but considering Vale had only paid £30,000 for his two years earlier, it represented an astonishing profit.

Other players to appear for both sides include:

  • Winger Kevin Kennerley joined the Vale from Burnley in 1976. He made 24 appearances for the Valiants.
  • Centre-half Peter Swan who won the Autoglass Trophy with Vale and later had two spells with Burnley.
  • Forward Ron Jepson who started his league career with Vale and later played for Burnley.
  • Striker Alan Lee had a loan spell with the Valiants before joining Burnley on a permanent basis.
