Port Vale in top spot after Crewe away following
Port Vale took the largest away support of the division to their opening game against Crewe Alexandra, the72.co.uk reports.
The average League One away attendance for the opening weekend of the season was 1,360 but Vale’s sell-out 2,309 was the division’s highest beating Wigan’s 2,000 following for their game against Coventry City.
Vale’s impressive following, dubbed the “White Wall” by the club was praised by chairman Norman Smurthwaite who tweeted that he “observed with great pride the two stands of white.” Vale players also paid tribute after the game as winger Sam Kelly’s tweet shows:
The smallest away following was understandably Southend Utd’s 479 for their long journey to Fleetwood Town.
