Opposing Views: Gillingham
Four Gillingham fans are highly confident of victory on Saturday afternoon…
About Opposing Views: Before each first-team game, OVF regular REP will bring you the views of the opposition with one or more supporters answering our questions. This time it’s the turn of Gillingham…
Tell us a bit about yourself?
SHEPPEY_GILL – I’ve been going to the Gills for around 23 to 24 years now.
HERR LJUNGA – My first game was in 1989/90 against Cambridge.
KEDDERZ – I grew up in the local area and have been a fan since I was six years old. All in all I have supported the Gills for thirty odd years.
ALPHABET_KING – I’ve been a fan since 99, when I was 13.
How do you expect your team to do this season?
I hope we can carry that enthusiasm into this term. I’d like to see us challenge for the play-offs…
SHEPPEY_GILL – After a slow start last season (and some pretty dull football under Taylor), we had a strong finish and I hope we can carry that enthusiasm into this term. I’d like to see us challenge for the play-offs.
HERR LJUNGA – If you’d asked me that question prior to the Sheffield United game I would have said upper mid-table. But given the manner in which we obliterated the Blades, we’ve got to be looking at the play-offs.
KEDDERZ – I expect us to reach the play-offs this season. We have strength in depth with youth, pace, power and intelligence throughout the squad.
ALPHABET_KING – I reckon we might finish 5-8th. The only place I wish we could have improved a bit more is up front.
Who should we watch out for?
Bradley Dack – watch out for him, he will be playing in the Premier League one day…
SHEPPEY_GILL – Most people would say Bradley Dack, and I agree. My favourite player is John Egan- such a classy centre back.
HERR LJUNGA – Bradley Dack – watch out for him, he will be playing in the Premier League one day and the rock at the heart of our defence John Egan.
KEDDERZ – Dack is undoubtedly our prize asset but in terms of danger men you could take your pick from a whole host of young talent that we currently have.
ALPHABET_KING – Bradley Dack, Egan, Ehmer, McDonald, Jackson, Osadebe…
How’s the manager doing?
His style of football is much more entertaining than we have had over the last few seasons which is very positive…
SHEPPEY_GILL – Edinburgh has signed young players who he can improve, which I am happy with. His style of football is much more entertaining than we have had over the last few seasons which is very positive.
HERR LJUNGA – I’m very impressed with what I’ve seen of Justin Edinburgh so far. Emmanuel Osadebe looks a real gem.
KEDDERZ – I went to a few pre-season games as well as the Utd game and all our signings appear to be good business.
ALPHABET_KING – His signings have been good so far. As I mentioned, I would have preferred a proven quality striker instead of Ben Williamson/Donelley.
Thoughts on the board?
It seems that every time the club does something positive off the field, something negative crops up too…
SHEPPEY_GILL – A contentious question! We’re in a much better position than when I first started supporting the club. We’ve had our ups and downs like most clubs. I respect that we try to adhere to a budget rather than blowing money we don’t have and then gambling on promotion to make the sums work.
HERR LJUNGA – It seems that every time the club does something positive off the field, something negative crops up too. For the first game of the season, we got a wide range of new club-run food options in the home ends. Great, that was good work and well done the club. However, a spat with BBC Radio Kent meant no commentary for GillsPlayer subscribers (me being one as an exile) with zero advanced notification for fans and still no official mention of it.
KEDDERZ – The club is in a good financial and stable position with a shrewd chairman. We are in good hands.
ALPHABET_KING – Scally is always an interesting one, never far from saying/doing something ridiculous. But I don’t think you can question his commitment.
How will Vale do this season?
A score prediction?
SHEPPEY_GILL – I would love a win to build up some momentum but I won’t be heartbroken if we don’t. 2-1 would be great.
HERR LJUNGA – 2-0 Gills, Dack and Norris.
KEDDERZ – I think we will be too strong for you and I’ll go with 2-0 Gills. Dack and a late McGlashen goal if he makes a late sub appearance.
ALPHABET_KING – 1-1 – Norris for Gills.
