Opposing Views: Burnley
Here are the views of a Burnley fan who thinks the Clarets will be “too strong” for the Vale on Tuesday night.
About Opposing Views: Before each first-team game, OVF regular REP will bring you the views of the opposition with one or more supporters answering our questions. This time it’s the turn of Burnley…
Tell us a bit about yourself?
Tom here, married with three grown up kids and seven grand-kids. Where I live is really hard to be a Clarets supporter, everyone round here is Spurs, Arsenal or Man Utd. I have still managed to get my son and four grandsons to give the Clarets a shout though, and even wearing the colours at times.
I grew up watching my hero Jimmy McIlroy, in my opinion he’s the best Claret there has been…
I first started watching Burnley in 1959, I was very lucky as that was the season they won the First division, I lived right opposite the cricket field gates and in those days used to sneak in to matches underneath the turnstiles, they were happy days. I grew up watching my hero Jimmy McIlroy, in my opinion he’s the best Claret there has been. I’m exiled now in Cambridgeshire and don’t go to many live games now. Oh and I will be an official OAP next January. I bide my time these days running The Longside website which I enjoy very much.
How do you expect your team to do in the cup?
With a small squad this season although cup runs can be exciting they can also be bad for us as there are more games for injuries etc. In the FA Cup I predict fifth round and in the League Cup the fourth round that would be about right for us.
Who do you think will win the League Cup this season?
Arsenal, they are good at it.
What’s your favourite cup goal of all-time?
Ronnie Radford’s goal for Hereford against Newcastle in 1972, a cracking goal, a screamer, I love to see the giants knocked out by the minnows.
What’s your favourite cup memory of all-time?
Sunderland beating Leeds United in the 1973 Cup Final, I can still see Bob Stokoe chasing across the pitch in his trilby and overcoat to get to Jim Montgomery, magic stuff.
Which players should we watch out for?
He could be anything this lad, he will most certainly be trying to impress in his first games…
Definitely George Boyd, probably Scott Arfield and the new lad Tendayi Darikwa, we have just signed him from Chesterfield, he could be anything this lad, he will most certainly be trying to impress in his first games.
Who do think will be Vale’s dangerman?
I don’t know anything about your guys, I only remember us thrashing you once I think we bagged seven and think that was in the 3rd division oh and in the league Cup we beat you 3-1 at your place recently.
