Port Vale fans will have been anxious when they heard the news that their three top goal scorers from last season were leaving to join other League one rivals.
Tom Pope went to Bury, Mark Marshall to Bradford City, and Ben Williamson to Gillingham.
For a team that were battling for survival in the division with these players, life without them did not seem to bode well. Even though The Valiants have started the season fairly well, they desperately need a replacement to step up and become a serious goal threat.
Even though The Valiants have started the season fairly well, they desperately need a replacement to step up and become a serious goal threat…
Vale have started the season with three draws in the league against Swindon, Gillingham and Crewe Alexandra, and a win in the Capital One Cup against last season’s Premier League dropouts; Burnley.
It is early days yet but with so few chances being created in the games so far, Vale fans will be wondering where all the goals are going to come from this season. There have been some promising looking new signings though it remains unclear who could hold the key once they get settled at the club?
One of these new signings is ex-Newcastle striker JJ Hooper who has joined Port Vale on a 2 year deal. 21 year-old Hooper scored 20 goals in 29 games last season for National South club Havant and Waterlooville last season but he will have to raise his game to be as effective at this level. The youngster does have a keen eye for goal though and he has the potential to become a prolific striker.Rob Page will be hoping he can help the player develop and get the very best out of him.
Hooper is perhaps the most promising of the three strikers that Vale have acquired this summer. The other two are Uche Ikpeazu on loan from Watford and AJ Leitch-Smith from Yeovil Town. Vale will be hoping that at least one of these new names can make an impact quickly. As not many Vale games will be televised, fans can watch the action online using live football streams.
Although claiming a point from each match so far is good, Vale need to start winning matches soon. Hopefully one of these new boys will hold the key.
