Vale owner won’t “keep spending hoping there’ll be a response”

Vale owner Norman Smurthwaite says he will only provide additional funds ” if I see the appetite or opportunity.”

Smurthwaite has explained that manager Rob Page has the same original playing budget as Micky Adams but he (Smurthwaite) will not be adding to it without seeing a reason to do so.

I cannot keep spending hoping there will be a response…

Posting on the onevalefan.co.uk forum, Smurthwaite said: “I have given Rob the same budget of £1.7m. The difference is… I will only invest if l see the appetite or opportunity.”

Smurthwaite then added: “I am not blaming the fans but where do l draw the line?

“I crave the success that you do. Having agreed £200,000 [additional spend] with Micky Adams it then went to £700,000.  Without that addition there would be no O’Connor or Marshall and some not worth stating. I cannot keep spending hoping there will be a response. So this season will be different as stated.”
