George Heppell player profile:
George Heppell was born in Durham and began his footballing career with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
In May 1937 he signed for Port Vale FC and the goalkeeper would stay at the club for the next fifteen years.
Heppell was a regular in his first season with the club – 1937-38 but lost his place to Arthur Jepson the following season. World War Two then brought football to an end until 1946.
The keeper was enlisted into the army and then returned to Port Vale after the war had ended. He was the regular first pick from 1946 to 1949 but he then lost his place to new signing Ray King. Heppell battled it out with King for the next two seasons but he was eventually released by the Valiants in 1952. He had made over two hundred appearances for the club during his lengthy stay. He later went on to play for Witton Albion.
