Walter Aveyard player profile:
Born in Yorkshire, Aveyard turned professional with Sheffield Wed in 1938 but he had to wait until the second World War ended before he could play for the first-team.
He scored on his debut but then struggled to get into the Wednesday first-team and left to join Birmingham City in 1947. He again scored on his debut but a thigh injury saw him miss the majority of the season.
In 1948, he joined Port Vale and once again netted on his debut – a 1-1 draw against Millwall in 1948. He was top-scorer that season with thirteen goals. He was less prolific in his second season, scoring just six time but the following season he became the first player to score at Vale Park when he netted in a 1-0 win over Newport County in August 1950. He lost his place in 1951 and was sold to Accrington for a “four figure fee” where (surprise, surprise) he scored on his debut.
He retired from football in 1953.
