Steve Cherry player profile:
Steve Cherry was a young goalkeeper who was signed by Port Vale on loan from Derby County in November 1980. Regular Port Vale keeper Mark Harrison was injured and Cherry was brought in as cover. His first game was an away draw against Burnley in the FA Cup.
However, the keeper is best remembered for his performance in Vale’s infamous 3-0 defeat to Enfield in the 1980 FA Cup third round. He returned to his parent club in January 1981 and Vale brought in the experienced Brian Lloyd as cover instead.
Cherry went on to have a long playing career with a lengthy spell at Notts County plus stays with Plymouth Argyle, Watford, Walsall and Rotherham United. He also played in the non-league for the likes of Kettering Town, Rushden, Gainsborough Trinity and Stalybridge Celtic. He even made a brief league appearance for Mansfield in 2004. He finally retired with nearly seven hundred first-team appearances to his name. He won two promotions and four player of the year awards.
