Simon Mills

Simon Mills

Time at club: 1987-1994

Appearances: 218

Goals: 8

A very popular long-serving right-back or midfielder who was yet another bargain signing by John Rudge.

Mills was signed from York City in 1987 for £35,000. The money came from the sale of Andy Jones and proved to be a bargain.

Mills couldn’t force his way into central midfield, which already had the partnership of Walker and Earle so he was converted to a classy ball-playing right-back.

The Vale corner routine of “MBE” (Mills to Beckford to Earle) proved to be a key factor in the club’s promotion in 1989.

Mills was a capable performer at the new high level but sadly injuries were to disrupt the latter part of his Vale career.

He was released on a free transfer in 1994.
