Simon Barker player profile:
Simon Barker was an experienced midfielder who joined Port Vale on a short-term contract.
The Valiants were the player’s third and last club after he had spent lengthy spells with Blackburn Rovers and Queens Park Rangers.
Barker was 34 years of age when he signed for the club but his signing in September 1998 coincided with an upturn in John Rudge’s side’s results. Barker also found himself on the scoresheet twice including a memorable goal against his former club QPR.
Following the sacking of John Rudge, Barker continued to be in the plans of Rudge’s successor Brian Horton and he made six appearances at the start of the 1999-2000 season. However, in November 1999, at the expiration of his contract he opted to retire from playing and left the club.
Barker subsequently remained in football working for the football union the PFA.
