Peter Pursell was a long-serving Scottish defender who joined Port Vale FC from Glasgow Rangers along with William Aitken and £3,000.
Pursell had begun his career at Queens Park and had made over a hundred appearances for Rangers before he moved to the Valiants. He won the Scottish League title with Rangers in 1918 and he had also earned a Scotland International cap in 1914. His fee was in two parts. Port Vale paid an initial £2,500 was paid and then a further £500 when the club returned to the Football League in 1919.
The defender made over 150 appearances for Vale over five seasons including a period when he partnered his brother Bob Pursell in the Valiants defence.
He left the Valiants in 1925 and joined Wigan Borough for whom he made 36 appearances. He ended his long playing career with over three hundred senior appearances for his four clubs plus a single goal to his name.
