Michael Cole Factfile
Michael Cole was born in Hillingdon but began his professional career at Ipswich Town. He made his first senior appearances in 1984 but four years on he had only totalled 46 appearances for Town, scoring six times.
In January 1988, Vale manager John Rudge was looking for a forward as new signing David Riley was suffering a goal drought and regular midfield scorer Robbie Earle was nursing a hernia injury. Cole was snapped up on loan and played in one of the more memorable periods of Rudge’s reign.
Cole started the famous FA Cup win over Tottenham played in the following two ties against Watford. He scored just once in his seven Vale appearances – a goal in 3-2 win over York City before he returned to his parent club. Vale replaced him with rookie Watford forward Dean Holdsworth.
He was released by Ipswich at the end of the 1987-88 season and subsequently joined Fulham before moving into non-league football.
