Jim Arnold player profile:
Jim Arnold was a hugely experienced goalkeeper who was born in nearby Stafford. He began his career at Stafford Rangers before spells with Blackburn Rovers and Everton. He won promotion with Rovers, the First Division title with Everton along with the Charity Shield and the UEFA Cup Winners Cup final.
He was released by Everton in 1985 and joined John Rudge’s Port Vale side on a one year deal. He was a key player as the side won promotion at the end of the 1985-86 season. Named as the club’s player of the year, Arnold felt this was the ideal time to announce his retirement as a player.
However, an injury to new keeper Mark Grew saw Arnold come out of retirement as he combined his new job as a policeman with a short term contract with the Valiants. He finished his playing career for a second time when the Valiants signed Alex Williams with a record of 67 appearances for the Vale.
