Born in Northern Ireland, James Lawrie progressed through the Port Vale youth ranks to be offered a professional contract in 2007.
He made his debut during the 2007-2008 season and scored his first senior Port Vale goal in a 3-0 win over Chester City in January 2009. He added another as he scored against Bury and did well enough to be offered a two and a half year contract. His form was also reportedly interesting Everton who invited the striker to train with their squad.
A regular in the Northern Ireland junior ranks, Lawrie earned his one and only senior cap in a friendly against Italy in June 2009.
Unable to break into the Port Vale first-team for the 2009-2010 season, Lawrie spent a loan spell with Kidderminster Harriers. However, he was still out of the first-team picture on his return and was released in the summer of 2o10. He moved on to AFC Telford United and Altrincham.
