Harry Griffiths was a long-serving defender who was signed by Port Vale from Everton in 1935.
He was a mainstay of the Valiants backline in the 1930’s. He had also played baseball as a second sport and during his time at Vale he also served in the police force and as a cricketer. Renowned for his toughness, Griffiths once suffered a serious head wound but played the next game in a black beret to protect the wound.
He signed up for the police on the outbreak of World War Two and also guested for Derby County and Port Vale. When the war finished he returned to the club playing until he was released in 1947 at the age of 35. He made over a hundred senior appearances for the Valiants.
